Back To School NC is an independent reference site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the U.S. Department of Education, or any school district or charter school.

Where the information comes from

  • Schools and districts: the NCES Common Core of Data (CCD), U.S. Department of Education, for the 2024-2025 school year.
  • Report cards: the North Carolina School Report Cards published by the state.
  • Calendar dates: each district's or school's own published calendar, read from its feed or document.
  • Maps: district boundaries from the federal school-district geography; attendance zones from district and county GIS services; base maps from OpenStreetMap.

Every page names its source and says when the data was read.

What it is not

  • Not official. Nothing here is a communication from a school, a district or a government agency. The official version of any calendar, boundary or figure is the one on the district's own site, which each page links to.
  • Not live. Data is read on a schedule. A district can change its calendar, redraw a zone or revise a figure after we last read it. Boards amend calendars mid-year, especially after weather days.
  • Not an assignment. An attendance zone shows what a district published and when. The district decides which school serves an address, and addresses near a boundary are often decided case by case.
  • Not advice. Report card figures and enrollment numbers are reproduced as published. They are a starting point, not a judgment of a school.

Documents shown here

Some calendar pages show a district's own published calendar, copied here so it can be read alongside the dates. Each is marked with the district's domain and links to the original. A small number were taken from a public listing and could not be confirmed against the district's own site; those are marked for review. If one is wrong, or a district wants its document removed, tell us and it will be taken down.
